What has been happening at CSC Mensa?

August Dinner Meeting, August 8:

Have you ever thought about how you like to learn or how you want information presented to maximize your recall and facilitate your effective use of the new knowledge? Dr. Christina Friend, a full professor in the University of South Carolina’s English Lan-guage and Literature Department, told us about current trends in education. Things have changed! Growing up during relatively hard economic times, today’s students tend to be cautious and concerned about finding meaningful work. They want to be prepared to get a job and contribute to society as soon as they finish school. They are  by-passing intellectual exploration and heading directly to interactive studies with more critical, multimedia thinking. They value opportunities for hands-on learning in class or by working on research projects. It is refreshing to discover that, despite this significant change in learning style, students still say that professors who inspired them and mentors who encouraged them make the difference in their education. Thank you, Dr. Friend, for bringing us this interesting topic.

Total Solar Eclipse, August 21, 2017

The eclipse on the afternoon of August 21 will be visible anywhere in Columbia. The University of South Carolina Department of Physics and Astronomy will set up a number of viewing sites around town (map) and will provide special glasses to make it safe to stare at the sun as the moon gobbles it up. Also, there will be a public lecture by Dr. Sarbani Basu of Yale University on Friday, August 18, at 7 pm.  The lecture will be held in the W. W. Hootie Johnson Performance Hall at the Darla Moore School of Business at 1014 Green Street.
